In today’s climate, practising Hindus are becoming a minority in India and those who are part of the Guru-shishya parampara (Guru-disciple tradition) are even less, making Hinduism foreign to Hindus themselves. Many lack the understanding or interest of their own traditions so when the media makes egregious claims about Hindu traditions, they are inclined to believe them.
When Indian Express published this absurd article about His Divine Holiness Paramahamsa Nithyananda abusing His disciples, Hindus should have been up in arms about this misrepresentation of the sacred Guru-disciple relationship. However, because they do not even understand it themselves, they’re only able to see it through the ethnocentric western perspective. While the Guru is the most trustworthy, fulfilling relationship one can have, that does not mean that a Guru will exploit you. As per Hindu sacred texts, Guru takes full responsibility for each disciple and is highly sensitive to that being. Indian Express takes such a sacred relationship and completely distorts it by saying that Paramahamsa Nithyananda abuses His devotees. Such claims have no evidence to back them up and to make them is irresponsible and completely offensive. They have done this very intentionally to spread distrust and hatred towards Hindu Gurus, directly leading the ethnic genocide of an ancient tradition.
